History from OVERMEER

Is a village near Nederhorst den berg near Utrecht (The Netherlands

Emperor Otto I gave in the year 953 the lakes Utermeer (Naardermeer) and Overmeer (Horstermeer) and the ground between them were Ankeveen is located, to the St Martinus church of Utrecht . Some time later the bishop gave the region to the Chapter of Sint Marie. At these times the peat bog mining began east of the river Vecht and Ankeveen became a religious unity under the authority of the motherchurch in Ter Horst (Nederhorst den Berg).

After the 10th centuryn whe the area of Werinon was getting the Utrecht bishop's propriety, the peat industry at a large scale made an origin of many community subdivisions. It is not well known when and why the name Werinon was changed into Nederhorst or Nederhorst den Berg.
The parishes of Werinon/Nederhorst and Nigtevecht were still for a long time with the region around the lake “Overmeer” an geographic unity with Nederhorst as the ancient centre.

The castle is said to have been built in 1257, the church still earlier. Philips van Wassenaar is considered to be the founder of the castle. He died in 1225, so that the year of establishment is presumably a century earlier. It was the seat of the lords Nederhorst, Den Bergh, Overmeer, Horstwaerde and Riethoven, names which recur in the documents relating to the domain. A number of these appellations are still held by the present chatelain.
